Japanese Swordsmanship Classes
Homonji Iaido is a practice based on techniques from the Koryu (old style) Japanese Sword Art Tamiya Ryu Iaijutsu. Our focus is on gaining balance, mindfulness, discipline and harmony in our lives.
Classes are open to people of all abilities, from absolute beginners to experienced martial artists. Students must be at least 16 years of age to start training. We use bokuto (wooden sword), shinai (bamboo sword) and Iaito (safe practice sword) and safety equipment while sparing. Shinken (live blades) are never allowed in classes (unless for special occasions, such as test cutting).
Our practice:We take a holistic approach to understanding Japanese Sword Arts. Through the study of various approaches, our students gain a well rounded education and practice. Our six areas of focus includes: Focus exercises (active practice, both solo and with partner), Kumitachi (paired kata forms), Kata practice (traditional forms), Randori (freestyle sparing with partner), Mindfulness practice (slow, controlled solo forms) and Mokusou (short meditation to clear the mind)

Tuesday Night: Foundations Class from 6:00 – 7:00 PMThis class is for newer students, from Mudansha (no rank) to 4th kyu. 3rd Kyu and above can visit this class as well, as space allows. This class focuses on the foundations of the art, and allows the student to build practice on correct form before moving on to more complex concepts.
Thursday Night: Applications Class 6:45-7:45 PMThis class is for those who have practiced for at least two years, are 3rd kyu and are ready to move into more advance applications and concepts of the art. This class is by invitation only, if you are unsure if you should attend this class, please ask Hoden Sensei prior.
Sunday Afternoon: All Member Class 12:00 – 1:00 PMThis class is for any rank and level. This class will focus primarily on activities that large groups can do safely.
Homonji Iaido classes are available to supporting members of DGZ (monthly membership required). New students are welcome to visit class before deciding to join.
