Homonji Iaido (Japanese Sword Arts)
WE ARE NOT ACCEPTING NEW STUDENTS AT THIS TIME DUE TO SOCIAL DISTANCING. CURRENT STUDENTS HAVE BEEN NOTIFIED OF THE CLASSES THEY SHOULD ATTEND.
Homonji Iaido is a practice based on techniques from the Koryu (old style) Japanese Sword Art Tamiya Ryu Iaijutsu. Our focus is on gaining balance, mindfulness, and having fun.
Classes are open to people of all abilities, from absolute beginners to experienced martial artisits. We ask that attendees be at least 12 years of age to start training. We use bokuto (wooden sword), shinai (bamboo sword) and Iaito (safe practice sword). Shinken (live blades) are never allowed in classes (unless for special occasions, such as test cutting).
We take a holistic approach to understanding Japanese Sword Arts. Through the study of the various approaches below, the student gains a well rounded education and practice.
- Focus exercises (solo and with partner)
- Kumitachi (paired kata forms)
- Kata practice
- Randori (freestyle)
- Mindfulness practice (solo forms)
- Tameshigiri (test cutting)
- Mokusou (a form of meditation)
